Knowledge Empowerment in Action—Naura Public Library (Season 5)

Jan 11, 2021
2020 marked the fifth year of the NAURA Philanthropic Library initiative. In response to the national call and recognizing the severe shortage of books in underprivileged areas, especially in Hubei, NAURA continued its quiet yet determined effort to make a meaningful difference.

After careful research and planning, NAURA launched a donation campaign in November 2020 to support nine schools.

Although the campaign lasted only two days, the enthusiasm was palpable—from the warm flurry around the canteen donation box, to the ever-growing list of contributors, to the joyful anticipation shared across countless chat groups. “If one small gesture can offer a child in a poor village a new possibility, or simply help them realize life holds more than what they’ve known, isn’t that incredible?”said a colleague from Hubei who spontaneously joined the volunteer team on-site.

The campaign concluded with record participation and funds raised. It brought joy to over ten thousand students in nine schools through donations of textbooks, science readers, storybooks, picture books, classics, pop-ups, and 11 types of sports equipment including jump ropes, basketballs, soccer balls, and badminton sets. On December 21, NAURA received a heartfelt letter from Principal Cui of Shiziba Primary School in Zhonglu Town, Lichuan City, Hubei Province. He thanked the NAURA team for their kindness, writing, “In this bitter winter, you’ve brought a ray of warmth to our mountain school.”

According to the 2019 White Paper on the Psychological Status of Left-Behind Children in China, 55.3% of rural schools lack a library. If reading is one of the most effective and accessible paths to educational equity, then enabling rural children to fall in love with books—and ensuring they have access to them—brings us closer to that goal.

When discussing the essence of education, few words resonate more than those of German philosopher Karl Jaspers: “Education is when one tree shakes another, one cloud pushes another, one soul awakens another.”To these children, the efforts of NAURA’s employees may be nothing more than a glance, a flicker of light—but who’s to say what that spark could ignite?  Even the smallest light might linger in the glow of a lantern, bloom in a single flower, or ripple across a galaxy of stars.
